January - 'Mutsuki'

The Chinese people use these characters as the name of this month, and this is. shown on Japanese calendars. The character 1Mutsu' means friendly, intimate or harmonious. Together they give the meaning of, the month of close relationship.

The New Year is a season by itself. When the Lunar calendar was in vogue, January the first was what is now the beginning of February. The plum trees were blooming in sheltered places, and the spirit of spring was already in the air. New Year's morning was felt to be the morning, not only of this day, but the morning of the whole year. The rejuvenation of nature coincided with a fresh trust in humanity, in one's own nature and the goodness of others, and in the Buddha nature. And this applied not only to the world of human beings, but the sight of the clouds, the blue sky and green grass, the sound of running water and the wind in the pine-trees. All these familiar things had on this. day a new significance.

All things are the same, yet all is new. The sameness and the difference; in the unity of these two, lies an unnameable, ineffable meaning which the following verse by Moritake, a former High Priest of Ise Shrine, rejoices to express.

'It is is New Year's morning,
I think also of the Age
    Of the Gods.
